This week WORN_RELICS© will be making a guest appearance at a special event in the Big Apple (where the owner of the Red Dress lives – see worn_dresses!) The evening, titled ‘MADE FLESH AGAIN, because novelty is dead’ is organised by Kathryn Schetlick and through different media aims to ‘challenge ideas of ownership and originality, the values that have become the troublesome anchors of our system.’ The experience will include a dance installation/performance, music and a clothing exchange whereby WORN_RELICS© provides the opportunity to share the story of your donated item and take home a new item with an old story plus of course, labels to stitch into that piece of clothing you have had forever enabling you to share its story online. So if you happen to be in the neighbourhood on Thursday, December 10th at 8pm, make your way to the
JACK HANLEY GALLERY on 136 WATTS STREET and enjoy!

Last week I was in Amsterdam to present WORN_RELICS©
at Beyond Green 2009 with the central theme of Good Design. The day was filled with inspiring lectures but the one I enjoyed the most was Carolyn Strauss from slowLab. She titled her talk Slow Design and focused not only on the slowing down and repairing of objects or products but urged us as designers to take some distance and start looking at repairing behaviour, relationships and in essence, society. She talked about the need for both slow and fast knowledge to best understand how we can create change and that this change can also happen in small places. In short she reminded us that being a designer is a huge responsibility!
The was also a short an interesting video presentation by Monique van Heist talking about her new project called Hello Fashion: a collection which no longer changes with each season but instead the timeless designs are added to a catalogue and are continually available.
In between the presentations visitors had the chance wander around the exhibition space in which up and coming designers had their work on display and could also exchange a piece of clothing in the Swapstore. Clare McNally and myself presented WORN_RELICS© in the middle of the Swapstore. We asked all ‘swappers’ to write down the story of their garment before handing it in so the new owner took home not only a pre-loved piece of clothing, but also a little part of its history. We also offered visitors the chance to become part of the online archive by creating a profile about a special piece of their clothing. We hope to see lots of new profiles on the site very soon!

On the 8th of September Clare McNally and Ruby Hoette presented WORN_RELICS©Live during the fashion@society symposium in Berlin. It was a beautiful sunny day and the venue was perfect to enjoy the diverse and interesting presentations and afterwards the view over the Brandendurg Gate. Visitors had the opportunity to come upstairs and chat to different people about their projects
and enjoy a bite to eat from the delicious catering. WORN_RELICS© attracted lots of positive response and we are looking forward to seeing some new profiles online from those who were inspired and took a WORN_LABEL home to sew into their favourite item. Thank you to all those who helped to make this day possible!
